“What if one day Google got deleted and we couldn’t Google what happened to Google?”
Google sort of rules the world now, right? How many times a day do you click on this search engine? The average is 3-4 times a day, with a whopping 9.5 million searches every minute worldwide.
Your subconscious is quite similar to Google. It stores vast amounts of information and is incredibly quick to respond to an inquiry. While we can usually instantaneously find what we are seeking on Google, many people feel it is difficult to rewire their subconscious mind, which is where all behavior comes from. But it’s actually easier than you may think.
Google updates information constantly. We humans can update our programming as well. Not as fast at Google, mind you, but pretty incredibly quickly. I’m in the business of helping clients hack undesirable habits and/or thought patterns, and replace with healthier, more desirable ones. The main thing to know about replacing an unhealthy habit with a desirable one is to understand how your subconscious takes its directions.
Most of us know that you can’t type into a Google search string what you do not want, because you will get exactly what you do not want. E.G., “…..no pornography…” What will Google present to you? Endless porn. This is because Google does not recognize a “no” or a negative at all. You need to type in the search string: “…..PG movies, family films, Disney flicks…” and you will get just that.
Just like Google, the subconscious cannot recognize a negative. Many people, unaware, spend copious amounts of time focusing on what they don’t want. And guess what? They get it!!! E.G., “I’m too old to get a new job….no one will hire me.” or “Don’t smoke!” or “I gain weight if I even think about food.” or “It’s so hard to date in this town.” These unhelpful beliefs can be shifted to helpful ones, with repetition of course, to “There are enough people wanting to hire someone with my experience and skills.” or “I’m only breathing in oxygen now.” or “I’m releasing the unnecessary pounds with proper nutrition and exercise.” or “There are enough good people in this town to date, and I’m finding ways to meet them.” In treating scores of professional athletes, I train them to catch their negative self-talk like “Don’t choke…don’t strike out!” and shift it to “I’ve got just the right grip on the bat and I’m going yard.”
Easier said than done, but noticing that negative self-talk is crucial to making positive changes. Shifting to a realistic, healthy belief, backed up with appropriate action is the formula for attaining any goal. Otherwise, it is hoping magical thinking alone will attain your goals. Positive self-talk is not magical; it’s scientific. Just like Google. And the very good news is that we can all learn to code our subconscious minds for attracting what we want.
If you have any doubts about how you are always actualizing your thoughts, just start examining what’s not working in your life right now, and what your consistent thoughts are. It will require vigilance and maintenance to keep shifting them into the positive, because we are human. We will always have some degree of negative thoughts. However, they are manageable, and it does become more automatic.
