I have to sing the praises of a great new book I’ve just completed on audio. THE DEVIL AND MAX LARGENT, by first-time author Michael Tomlin, is a fellow Southerner with a powerful voice (both literally and artistically) and story to tell.
While many folks adore the New Year and getting a fresh start, many are triggered by painful memories, negative associations with loss, coping with imminent loss, disappointments, regrets, the deception that nostalgia can present, life, choices, and mistakes, this book speaks to that. My office gets extremely busy during this season with existential questions such as: “What is the point of it all anyway?”
Without spoiling it, the conceit of this book is a conversation with “the devil” or the demons that taunt us when we are in a vulnerable state. Whether you believe the “devil” is simply the dark side we all harbor to some degree, or you believe there is an actual Satan, and regardless if you are spiritual at all, if you are simply human, this book will shed fresh perspective (and humor!) about life, death and the human experience in general. It just may help you sort out your own answers to “What is the point of it all anyway?”
This book has made me pray for traffic jams on the 405 so I can stay in the car and listen to more. An exquisitely sensitively written fiction, I could swear it is Vincent Price who reads the part of the devil.
If you are looking for a book that is moving and probing, check out THE DEVIL AND MAX LARGENT by Michael Tomlin (Amazon, paperback, Kindle, and audio). Recent review: https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/reviews/listing?Title=The+Devil+and+Max+Largent+
