“Right is of no sex, truth is of no color…and we are all brethren.”
– Frederick Douglass
How thrilling that Black History Month this year includes so many African American Oscar nominations and wins! I personally was rooting for the historically-based HIDDEN FIGURES to win Best Picture…who knows, maybe it did and someone read the wrong envelope??? What a rich contribution this year made to filmdom for people of all colors…MOONLIGHT, FENCES, LION…all exquisite pictures that complement the equally important MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, LA LA LAND, HACKSAW RIDGE and HELL OR HIGH WATER.
Growing up in the Deep South in the 1960’s, I witnessed a lot of painful black history as it unfolded. But I missed a few hundred years prior to that. So to fill that hole in my education, each February I read a book on a famous African American. Currently, I am reading The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Spectacular read! I encourage some filmmaker to take on his biopic.
Movies are important. They help us understand each other and celebrate our differences.
Happy Black History Month. Go see a movie.
Best of Health,
